It was a weekend of Soca and it continues. Memorial weekend in the United States brought with it an onslaught of Soca hit makers and even as far as Cancun, Mexico, soca penetrated, proving that the genre, despite the obstacles faced over the years, continues to grow. On the weekend, ETCETERABUZZ took in the posts of our soca stars as they took to their social media pages to share with fans, there whereabouts on the weekend. The Asylum clip, inclusive of soca baby, Syri, hopped across the states, hitting Atlanta, New York and Orlando for events in those parts. Machel Montano meanwhile, made his presence felt in Cancun, Mexico while Patrice Roberts took her Love Music Tour 2013 to Orlando, Florida and the ATL.
The energy of Soca has been flowing non stop since Carnival 2013. Several carnivals are progressively engaging soca lovers across the world. Today marks the end of Atlanta carnival as well as Orlando’s. For that reason of course, Patrice Roberts, Fay-Ann Lyons, Bunji Garlin and Asylum, Nadia Batson, Farmer Nappy, Swappi, Lyrikal and even Ricardo Dru, were in Orlando on Saturday. Last night, Patrice, Lyrikal and JW and Blaze were the soca ambassadors among a Caribbean star-studded cast that included, Jamaica’s Beenie Man, Konshens, Cocoa Tea, Sanchez and the new sensation, Chronixx. That event was the Best of the Best 2013 concert held in Miami, Florida.
Reigning Groovy and Power soca monarch king, Machel Montano was also a man in demand this past weekend. He performed in Cancun, Mexico and then jetted off to Atlanta where he made an appearance at Splash alongside Mr. Vegas and Farmer Nappy. Destra Garcia, never one to be left out of the fun- performed to what she described as a crowd that was full of vibes in Oakland, California.
The weekend wasn’t all work and no play for our soca heavyweights however. Consistent with his social media updates, Bunji Garlin showed off some awesome photos taken of his daughter Syri and her mom, Fay as they explored the Dinosaur museum and even met up with actor, Danny Glover on board their flight to Orlando. And as if that wasn’t enough, they even made a pit stop with Syri at Disney World.
Meanwhile, if you think for one second that the fun is over internationally, think again. Kes the Band are in Los Angeles, California and they’re set to create a soca-centric atmosphere at UCLA later today when they perform at the JazzReggae Festival. Kees and his team recently made their presence felt at the Berlin carnival. Now, without a doubt, their sound will touch the hearts of thousands in LA later today. Hats off to all of the artistes who continue to take the music of Trinidad and Tobago, and pieces of the culture to the world at large.
